Ava Smith

Ava Smith has been working quietly since '05, but this year the Chicagoan
stunner came into her own with a catwalk sweep that was nothing short of
impressive. Blessed with elegance, grace and undeniable charm, Ava's classic look has graced the cover of V Magazine and campaigns for Burberry, Max Mara & Topshop.
Name: Ava Smith
Age: 16

Ethnic Background: Lithuanian, Irish, French, German, English
How discovered: I was on the beach and a photographer spotted me
and recommended that I meet with Elite Chicago.
What was your experience like being 15 and starting a career in
modeling?Well, my agency has always been sensitive about my age,
saying “Listen, we know you’re young, so we want you to stay in school and do everything you want to do. If you say no to every job from here on out, we’ll still call you.” So, for me, my experience was very, very good. I’m kind of
blessed that I started in Chicago where things are not quite the crazy fashion world like in New York or Paris.
Favorite things: Reading, Sports, Traveling, Archery
Favorite Designers: Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Prada
Movie you want to see next: Broken Flowers
Place you would like to visit: New Zealand
Person you most admire: My grandfather
5 words to describe yourself: Silly, bubbly, eccentric, complicated,

Esther Heesch
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/8/6/13867297/8745529.jpg?465)
Who says high fashion has to be complicated? Esther Heesch is an elegant,
effortless blond beauty who looks right on every runway and in campaigns for See
by Chloe, Valentino and Bennetton.
Name: Esther Heesch
Where did you grow up in Germany?: Im from the north, from the seaside, near Hamburg, in a city called Lübeck. I think it's my favorite city in the world. We live in a really, really old house from the Middle Ages. My mother's a goldsmith and my father's a doctor, and I have an older sister — she's 18, and a younger brother — he's 13.
How were you discovered?: I was looking for shoes in Hamburg, and somebody asked me if I wanted to try out modeling and I said, "Yeah, why not?" I started [last] year — my mother agency is called Modelwerk in Hamburg, and then I signed with Next. I hadn't thought about modeling earlier, but I was always tall and I sometimes watched TV shows about modeling, like Germany's Next Top Model with Heidi Klum, but I really like fashion, actually, and I make a lot of my own clothes.
What do your parents think? They're really proud. [Laughs.] And my grandma, she watched my first show — it was the Dior Haute Couture show — she sat in front of the computer and watched the live-stream and she started crying. It was so sweet. [Laughs.]
What shows stood out for you last season? Of course Valentino, because I opened, and this was so nice. I really loved the music in the show and the dresses were awesome. Also Chanel — Chanel was great.
So, what do you do in your spare time? I do ballet. I started when I was 6.
Is it hard being a 16-year-old
model? In the beginning, it was sometimes hard with the English, but
I think it gets better after some time. I always go alone to the cities, but my
mother came with me to New York when I went the first time. I'm in New York now,
shooting some things, and soon I will go home again because I have school. But
I've met a lot of people from different countries ... I don't know how young is
too young to model. I think it depends on how you feel. Every person is
different.

Irene Hiemstra
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/8/6/13867297/74302.jpg?482)
Elegant and icy with a touch of class, Irene is a perfect representation of Prada's off-kilter chic. Is it any wonder then that the megabrand has tapped the Dutch beauty for two campaigns in a row.
Name: Irene Hiemstra
You're a relatively new face to modelling. How long have you been modelling for, how were you initially discovered, and had you given modelling much though previously? I never really though that I could be a model, people usually think I'm very strange looking, not really a "babe"! After looking at some magazines, I thought I'm going to send some pictures to some agencies and then very next day, Paparazzi Model Management in Amsterdam called me and then I started with them right away. I have been modelling for 2 years now, but only 1 year full-time.
Where are you from and how old are you? I'm from Friesland in the Netherlands (the same town as Doutzen Kroes) and I'm 19.
You recently appeared at the Spring/Summer 2013 collections in Paris where you walked for Dries Van Noten, Pedro Lourenço, Alexander McQueen and Céline (which you closed). Were you happy with how things went this past season? Yes, last season was a real surprise, and I'm really grateful for Dries Van Noten and Russell Marsh, they really gave me a big chance to evolve!
Modelling can be a lonely profession with lots of travelling and time spent in hotels away from family and friends. A big support during the show season comes from the friendships formed with other models. Who are your closest model buddies and what qualities are most important to you in friendships? I'm very social, so I pretty much get along with a lot of people, and find it interesting to meet new people. So I never really feel lonely, though I do miss my pets!
What do you love most about modelling and if there was one aspect of the industry that you could alter, what would that be? I love the travelling! And I would wish only that there was no such thing as jet lag!
What is the most valuable advice anyone has offered you with regards to modeling? The best advice is; to be focused and professional, to be yourself and enjoy every day!
What do you feel are the biggest challenges that you face as a model? I think for me the greatest challenge is to understand this business and to learn as much as I can hopefully from all the new projects that I will be doing.
What makes you "Inoubliable" (Unforgettable)?
IH: My angry bird look ;-), and I can be "a rage against the machine", love that song! Haha...

Julia Frauche
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/8/6/13867297/660213.jpg?498)
Julia Frauche has the kind of serene blonde good looks that will always be in demand. Timeless beauty never goes out of style, and with ads for Jason Wu, Gucci, and Topshop already under her belt, we're sure to see Julia around for a very long time.
Name: Julia Frauche
How were you discovered and how would you describe your modelling journey? What would you say has contributed to your recent modelling success? I was discovered when I was 16 in the south of France but at the time I didn't want to be a model. School was very important for me so I waited until I graduated and moved to Paris to attend university. Then I decided with my mother agent to meet agencies in Paris and I started the next day! But I was shy and not really ready for this business, it took me a while to accept the idea of stopping university and being a model. The factor that has contributed most to my recent modelling success is maturity. I feel like a woman and not a teenager anymore. I've got more confidence and I know myself more. I also learnt during all these years that modelling is a real profession and that you need to find your place in the industry. So a year ago, I finally felt ready for the shows and I really was!
What are the biggest misconceptions about models and the modelling industry in general? That we earn millions while doing nothing! Also that modelling is the easiest job in the world, and that we are all anorexic and drug addicts. There are so many misconceptions and it's funny when you meet someone who has these prejudices then after 5 minutes he/she realises that you are actually a normal person with the same interests or private life as anyone else.
The shows coupled with endless castings, fittings etc can be pretty stressful. Throughout the chaos there is a camaraderie evident between the models. Did you form any close bonds with other models? This is one of the best parts of Fashion Week, being all together. We spend a full month, everyday together supporting each other, having fun. It's very important because when you get too tired or stressed, you always find someone to change your mind. It's almost like going to summer camp!
What are your hopes for the future and do you have any dream assignments on your bucket list? My plan following the S/S 2013 season is to work for great editorials and some campaigns as well. For the future, I just want to continue my career as long as it makes me happy and I feel good about myself. And as a French model, my dream would be to appear on the cover of Paris Vogue!
The life of a model involves a lot of travelling and time spent alone. What do you love and miss most about home? I miss my family and friends the most. I'm never there for birthdays or special events and they always remind me how great it would be if I could be there. But they totally understand and respect my choice. What I love most about home when I am there is that I don't think about work or travelling or (modelling) options. I am not a model anymore, I am just me and I like the fact that my family and friends never see me as a model.
What are your likes and dislikes about modelling?
JF: I love the travelling and having this exciting life which is never boring. I am very glad that I have the chance to meet people from everywhere with different cultures and being in places I could never have dreamt about. And also working with such talented and great people all the time. The things I dislike are that I can never plan anything, I usually do everything very last minute.

Maria Bradley
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/8/6/13867297/5281668.jpg?517)
In a sea of waifish, doe-eyed blondes, Maria Bradley stands out from the pack; her tough girl cool and nonchalant beauty make her a favorite for designers like Alexander Wang (who had her open his S/S show) and Reed Krakoff. The chic All-American Bradley has already made her mark in an impressive number of editorials for mags like LOVE, Dazed & Confused, and i-D, and her meteoric rise shows no signs of stopping.
Name: Maria Bradley
Tell us a bit about your childhood: When I was young, all I would do is run around with my best friend Hanna, her brother, and my brother Jerry. We ruled the neighborhood. We would fish and play hide-and-seek until nighttime. One of my brothers, Jim, is a cop, and Jerry is studying to be a cop. My dad designs a lot of things in Wichita, like streets, roads, and fountains. He also designed a light sculpture that, every time I pass by, I brag to everyone. My mom did anything and everything for the family — she is always there for us. I know everyone says they want to be like their mom, but once, when I was younger, I even went as far as cutting my hair, just so I could be like her. Except afterward, I hid it in my play kitchen and blamed my dog for cutting it.
How did you get discovered? My mom modeled and I always saw her pictures and thought they were cool. One day, I was just sitting there and I asked her if I could model. My mom used to work at Models and Images and knew the owner Maryann, so she took me in when I was 14 years old and got started.
Of all the shows you walked this season was anything hard to wear? Actually, every designer made things really cool and easy [to wear], so there really wasn't anything too crazy.
What's one thing that surprised you about the modeling industry? I was surprised by how many people are so cool. At first I thought everyone was going to be stuck up, but they aren't at all. I also never really knew how much I would love this industry until this show season has taken off. I never thought that I'd want to do this for a long time, but now I do.
You were on exclusive with Versace for the spring 2012 Milan Fashion Week; tell us about that experience. Having an exclusive is really cool because you get to spend so much time behind the scenes, with the designer and their whole team, leading up to the show. It's a lot of hard work and long hours, but [it's] so cool to see their process and the work that goes into a collection. There are so many people that make the show happen. I also like it because you get to fit almost everything that's in the show, and it's cool to see which models they choose to complete the outfits.
Guilty pleasure? Making home movies with my friends on summer days when we're really bored. Who needs to go to the movies when we can make our own?
What scares you? Being helpless. I would rather have someone hold a gun to my head than not able to do anything at all in a situation.
Tell us something random and totally weird: I could stare at art forever — not because it's beautiful, but because I want to know what they were thinking when they made it.
You're about to be stranded on an island and you can bring one person and one thing, what would you bring?
I wouldn't want someone I love with me because I wouldn't want them in that situation, that's horrible to wish upon someone you love. Maybe a stranger? I would also bring a hairbrush because who wants gross, knotted hair. No hairbrush equals dread locks.
f not modeling, what would you be doing?
I would be sitting in an old, boring high school, walking in the halls like a zombie finishing out my senior year.

Hailing from North Carolina, Martha is one of the newer faces to work alongside the greats in Miu MIu's S/S campaign extravaganza. Though she's been steadily working for a couple of years now, SS13 proved her breakout season, with show after impeccable show, from Jason Wu and Rag and Bone to Versace and Mugler.
Name: Martha Hunt
Fill us in on some of the gaps. Whereabouts in the US are you from, how long have you been modelling for, and how were you initially discovered? I am from a small tobacco town in North Carolina. I won a model search in NC when I was still in high school, but wanted to finish school first. I moved up to New York after I graduated to give it a shot. The rest has been a roller-coaster.
Your Spring/Summer 2013 show list included appearances at Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Prada, Miu Miu, Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, and Chanel! Was it an emotional experience to finally crack the high fashion market after many years of grunt modelling, and what is the memory that you most treasure from the entire season? Well truthfully, I have always worked hard at my job because I feel blessed to be doing it. Cracking into high fashion opens up the doors for far more prestigious and creative opportunities, that really motivate me. I don't regret my prior work, however. It is relative to some of my current jobs, and it humbled me and prepared me on how to work hard, have patience and discipline to attain the same objective; a Job well done. My most treasured memory is when my manager called me to list all of the shows I was booking in New York. I was in a cab, and called my sister right after. I was full of emotions.
What are the most valuable life lessons that you have garnered from your experiences in the modelling industry so far? There are too many to wrap my head around. Anything is possible if you believe in yourself. Trust your instincts, surround yourself with the right people. I have learnt that being shy and reserved won't benefit you. Don't feel sorry for yourself for a second. Once you make an effort to get out there and meet people, the whole fashion experience becomes much more enjoyable. Keep someone close to you that keeps you grounded. Find your personal from of release, like meditation, or cooking. Don't take yourself too seriously. It's always ok to speak up. Turn the negative into positive. These lessons are rolling off a bit too easily! American girls are making a big comeback in fashion with yourself, Ava Simth, Wylie Hays, Juliana Schurig, Athena Wilson, Madison Headrick and Ondria Hardin helping to redefine concepts of American beauty. What is your definition of modern day American beauty? I am often told I don't look American until I open my mouth. It's amazing how the American girl's features vary so much because we come from different backgrounds. The modern American girl can look like she's from anywhere. No cookie cutter image comes to mind.

Following up a season of Miu Miu with Prada is not a bad way to start your career. The stunning Sung Hee is off to the kind of start most models dream about and with editorial appearances going strong, she's a girl to watch this year.
Name: Sung Hee Kim
Fill us in on some of the gaps; whereabouts in Korea are you from and how long have you been in the modelling game? I am originally from Seoul, Korea which is where I started modelling. I worked there for a couple of years before coming to New York. Prior to modelling, I studied and have a major in ballet and have been practicing for ten years.
How were you discovered/scouted and what was your initial reaction to being asked if you wanted to be a model? I was approached by my Korean agency after they spotted me. I was always interested in modelling because I thought it would be a great experience for me to explore. I accepted immediately because I didn't want to let the opportunity slip by!
Are you based in New York now? Has it been difficult adjusting to the pace of New York City and what is it that you most like about the city? Yes, I've been living in New York for about a year now. In the beginning, I was scared since it was my first time abroad. Being away from my family and friends was hard at first but I quickly became comfortable because I got to meet lots of old friends and make new ones. So, I don't feel lonely anymore,
Being a relatively new face in modelling can be difficult with lots of rejection and possible criticism. How do you handle this aspect of your profession and what do you feel are the most important factors for wowing casting directors and designers? I try to be confident and to bring a positive attitude. It is part of my job to deal with rejection/criticism. I have to be always careful not take them personally because everyone is looking for a model to help bring their imagination to life, and so no one model can be the perfect match to every job.
What do you like/dislike most about modeling? I really like that I get to meet and work with so many talented people I admire. Also I get to travel all over the world so I can't complain much! Sometimes though, I get stressed from busy flight schedules and overweight luggage!
What do you miss most about Korea and have you found any decent Korean restaurants in New York (tell me because I love Korean food!) I miss my friends and family the most, but for food we're lucky to have K-town in NYC! I would recommend "Chodanggol" - it's one of my favourite Korean restaurants in Manhattan. They serve amazing tofu dishes!
What makes you "Inoubliable" (Unforgettable)? Because of my dance background, I think one of my best points is being able to perform dynamic movements with precision. Also, since I was a child I was always listening to various types of music while dancing and that practice helps me to express myself and my emotions in various and beautiful ways in front of the camera too.

Wylie Hays

When Olivier Theyskens says that he's obsessed with you, it's usually a good sign of things to come. Theyskens approved Californian beauty Wylie Hays is front and center in the campaign for Theory and in the pages of Dazed & Confused.
Name: Wylie Hays
How were you discovered and was it always part of your master plan to pursue modeling? I've always been active and love the beach - I guess you could say I was a tomboy. I'd been told I should model in the past and I was interested but never knew how to get started. A girl at my high school put me in touch with Larry Clauson who scouts models for Next. Then, I spent a couple of months getting ready to go into the agency; working out, eating right etc. I signed with Next in Los Angeles last December and things took off from there.
You clearly made an impression at castings, landing some big name shows. What were the season highlights for you? There were so many highlights and great experiences this season! Alexander Wang was an amazing first show and it was such an honour to be chosen as an exclusive. I love his enthusiasm and his creativity. Theysken's Theory was awesome too. The designers were so nice and there was a really good energy to the show. And Proenza Schouler!! I was so happy to open for them and it was a lot of fun. I love their clothes! Fashion Week in Milan was crazy but I was happy to be a part of it.
What are the biggest misconceptions about models and the industry? Some misconceptions about models are that they are unhealthy and that they don't work hard. Modelling requires a lot of energy and stamina. I have worked really long days before. Once I worked a 20 hour day, got three hours sleep and then worked a 12 hour day the next day and I'm only 17! I love what I do, but it can be really demanding. Also most of the models I've come across are pretty healthy and pay attention to what they eat. It would be hard to do all that is required of a model, living off diet coke and cigarettes and still managing to look good.
Do you feel that the industry will ever be able to rekindle the supermodel phenomenon of the early 90s? I'm really not sure. You see celebrities, actresses, artists etc who appear in fashion spreads, magazine covers and as product spokespersons. I think perhaps that the whole concept of a supermodel will never come back in the same way again. Top models used to be recognised by the average person in a way that they aren't anymore unless they are involved in other things too like film and the entertainment field.
What do you hope to achieve in modelling and what would be your ultimate dream assignment? I hope to get some good campaigns, shows, and editorials. Most of all, I would like to have a nice, long career. Right now, I'm just having fun and soaking up all of this travel and life experience. My ultimate dream assignment is to do a shoot with Steven Meisel for Vogue Italia. Steven Meisel is such an amazing photographer and I really admire his work. I would love to do a shoot with him!
If you could invite any five key industry figures to dinner, who would they be? I would invite Anna Wintour, Steven Meisel, Arizona Muse, Kate Moss, and Karl Lagerfeld!
What do you feel are some of the greatest challenges that you face as a model? One of the biggest challenges I face as a model is being confident in myself. There can be the illusion that models are perfect, so sometimes I think that is how I need to come off even if I have a day when I might feel otherwise. Another challenge is fitting into the clothes and shoes. Even for a model, I'm on the taller end of the spectrum - 180 cm in height, so clothes are sometimes short on me. Also, I have a size 11 foot, so it's always awkward when people ask me to shove my foot into a size 9-10. I know a lot of models with the same problem though and we hope that people start making bigger shoes!
What makes you "Inoubliable" (Unforgettable)? My enthusiasm and the fact that I love what I do. I love modelling and everything that goes into it. When I'm on a shoot or walking in a show, I feel like I'm part of a creative process. At the same time, I can bring an intensity and emotion to photographs and I think this makes me memorable. Oh, and I'm also really tall!

Kremi Otashliyska
![Picture](/uploads/1/3/8/6/13867297/3512462.jpeg?545)
Bulgarian beauty Kremi is hitting all the right notes: runway domination, blue chip editorials in all the right magazines and now a space in Balenciaga's Meisel helmed campaign.
Name: Kremi Otashliyska
Tell us a little about your childhood: When I was in Bulgaria I think I had one of the best childhoods. Not like now, with Facebook and everything; no, I was outside, climbing. I grew up with bruises and stuff [laughs]. My childhood was basically me and two girls, and I was the really controlling girl. I would say, "If you don't do this we won’t play!" I was really mean.
How did you get discovered? In Bulgaria my father has a friend whose wife has an agency there. She said, "You should do this!" I was like, "Okay, let's try." So I did a test in Bulgaria — I was 14, I think — and they sent it to Barcelona because that was basically where I was living. In Barcelona, View Management liked me, and from there Ford liked me.
What was going through your head the moment before you walked down the runway at the Balenciaga show? I was really, really nervous. I was like, I hope I don't fall. The floor was made up of lights and when you stepped on them you felt like you were going to break them — and then [doing it while wearing] high heels! But once I was on the catwalk I was like, Oh that feels nice.
Did you ever practice your walk? Maybe just a bit, when I was wearing high heels or something. But you can't really learn how to walk. It has to be natural; either you have it or you don't.
Has anything surprised you about modeling? It's really hard. Many people think that you just stand there in front of a camera being pretty, but it's not; you have to wake [up] early, you have to go to castings, you have to meet a lot of people, you have to always look perfect no matter if you slept or not. Sometimes you work more than 12 hours, or you're arriving someplace at the airport and you just go [straight] to work.
Do you consider yourself pretty?
No … I mean, I don't know. Maybe … yes … but I'm really critical about myself and other people. I'm a perfectionist, so I'm okay but I don't like my legs. I want them to be fatter, they're too skinny.
What’s your biggest secret? I own a lot of shoes for my age — maybe 30 pairs? But I don't wear them all, I just wear two or three. That's what always happens! My favorite pair are tiger [print] wedges, they're nice and comfortable.
Do you have a life motto? I can talk forever about life — like, "You have to do this and this." But basically, life is hard for everybody. It doesn't matter if you're rich or if you're ugly or if you're poor. There's this thing in Bulgaria which we say: To be the first one is hard, but to remain the first one is harder.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I'll probably have one baby. Or maybe two — it depends how it goes. I want to be a really early [mother], at 21, 22, I want to have a baby. Many people say, "I don't have time for a baby." That's a really stupid thing for me because it's just a baby; it's not like you're dying or something.
And where do you see yourself tomorrow? I'm going to buy shoes because I found really nice shoes from a really cheap store. I'll go buy them and then I'll go hang out and relax!

Yumi Lambert

A face like none other and a presence that captivates, Yumi was destined to be in demand and in one short season she's more than made good on that promise. Runway struts for every show worth mentioning, a campaign for Chanel, editorial work in Dazed & Confused, not a bad way to kick things off!
Name: Yumi Lambert
You possess one of the most striking and original faces that the modelling industry has seen in eons. Tell us a little about your background and how you got into modeling? I'm from Belgium and am a quarter Japanese from my dad's side. I'm 17, soon to be 18 in April and started modelling when I was 15. I was not really discovered or scouted, but instead went into an agency myself and asked if I could be a model. I hope to model for a long time and to continue to grow and progress more.
Your bi-racial looks have drawn comparisons to former top model Devon Aoki. Are you familiar with Devon and how do you feel about the comparison?Yes, of course I know of her but not personally. I think she is a really beautiful woman and I'm really happy that people associate me with her. I only hope to have achieved a similar success by the end of my career.
You look amazing both on the runway and in print. Do you have a presence for either and what would be your dream assignment? Thank you, I really like both. The runway gives off a really incredible energy while print work offers something totally different but I love it. I would love one day to be a Victoria's Secret Angel, it's a little bit of a dream for me and one of the reasons why I started modelling in the first place.
How was it coming into the shows as a newcomer and did you form friendships with any other models? Yes I met many girls. Modelling is a job where we are far away from our family and friends so it's really important to form new friendships so that we are not forced to be alone which would be no fun for anyone!
What are the biggest misconceptions about models and the industry? This is really not an easy job, yes it is easier than some other jobs but in this profession we don't get to see our family, friends or boyfriend sometimes for months. Also when we are feeling tired, we can't say "sorry it's not possible today...", and instead we need to project a happy and fresh attitude.
What aspects of modelling do you like or dislike most? I really enjoy visiting and seeing a lot of countries. I also like modelling because when I'm working, I'm not really thinking about the rest of my life. It's kind of provides an escape, kind of like when people go dancing. As for my dislikes, I don't get to see my old friends very much, maybe one day per month. Models are every time in different countries and I am always having to say no to a lot of familial events. Sometimes also, a job may be confirmed only a day before, so then you have to cancel all personal engagements with family and friends.
What are your goals and hopes for the future? I hope to model for as long as possible and if I had to stop, I would like to remain in some aspect of the fashion industry.
